In light of the upcoming G-20 Summit in New Delhi, the Delhi government has taken steps to ensure a smooth event. All schools, offices, and NDMC market areas will remain closed from September 8 to 10. The Delhi Police had formally requested the Chief Secretary to declare these days as public holidays and to enforce the closure of commercial and business establishments in ‘controlled zones’.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has given his approval to this proposal, and it will now be forwarded to Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor. As per India Today’s report, September 7 is a gazetted holiday, and September 9 falls on the second Saturday, leaving September 10, Friday, as the only school off day.

The decision to close schools, government offices, and MCD offices on these dates has been made to facilitate VIP movements and route arrangements. The goal is to ensure that the general public doesn’t encounter unnecessary commuting problems due to these arrangements.

Private offices and institutions will also remain shut during this period. Banks and financial institutions under Delhi Police’s New Delhi district will observe closure, and the same applies to shops and commercial establishments within this district, as designated by the administration.

Special Police Commissioner Madhup Tiwari of the Delhi Police recently wrote to the chief secretary, urging the declaration of a public holiday from September 8-10 and the issuance of directives for the closure of primarily New Delhi-based commercial establishments in light of the G20 Summit.

The G20 Summit will welcome esteemed leaders like US President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping, along with other heads of nations. Biden’s visit to India spans from September 7 to 10 to partake in the summit, as shared by White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan on Tuesday. While in India, Biden will engage in several bilateral meetings, details of which are yet to be disclosed.”
